Using Virtual COM Port Dials Modem as Pulse Only (263643)

SYMPTOMS

When you connect to a modem pool with the Small Business Server Modem Sharing service from a Windows 2000-based computer, the modem may not respond or may respond incorrectly by not dialing, dialing only in pulse mode, or without using other initialization strings.

CAUSE

An incompatibility between the standard Unimodem driver and the Modem Sharing client results in a corrupted modem initialization string being sent to the modem. This prevents the modem from responding correctly.

RESOLUTION

For computers on which Windows 2000 is already installed, obtain the hotfix and then follow these steps:
  1. Place the hotfix file on a floppy disk or in a folder on the hard disk.
  2. Quit all running programs because the computer is restarted when you apply the hotfix.
  3. Using Windows Explorer, locate and double-click the hotfix file.
  4. When you are prompted to restart the computer, remove the floppy disk (if you used one), and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
