Internet Explorer Security Settings Set to Custom in Windows Me (263518)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q263518

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Windows Millennium Edition (Me), or perform a clean installation of Windows Me on a computer without a previous operating system installed, all Web content zones are set to Custom Level on the Security tab in the Internet Properties dialog box. As a result, the slider that you use to set your security settings is missing.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the default security settings for Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 are changed. In Internet Explorer 4.x, there are three templates for security settings, but in Internet Explorer 5, there are four templates. Active Scripting is disabled by default with a High security setting in Internet Explorer 5.5.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  2. On the Security tab, under Select a Web content zone to specify its security settings, click Default Level for each zone.
After you do this, you can use the new security templates in Internet Explorer 5.5. You must re-establish any customizations you have made to your security settings.

STATUS

If you upgrade to Windows Me from Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98, existing security settings are preserved and this behavior is by design. For clean installations of Windows Me, this behavior is caused by a problem in Windows Me Setup.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows Me.
