SYMPTOMS

When you install Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1), the files in the System_drive:\Cmdcons folder are not updated.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you must run the winnt32.exe /cmdcons command again from an integrated installation (also known as a "slipstreamed" installation) of Windows 2000 and SP1.

To create a "slipstreamed" installation of Windows 2000 and SP1:
  1. Connect to the network or computer on which you want to create the distribution folder.
  2. On the network distribution share, create a distribution folder for the Windows 2000 installation files.
  3. Insert your Windows 2000 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive, and then copy the contents of the CD-ROM to the distribution folder that you created in step 2.
  4. Remove the Windows 2000 CD-ROM from the CD-ROM drive, and then insert the Service Pack CD-ROM.
  5. To apply the service pack to the Windows 2000 installation files in your distribution folder, at a command prompt, extract the W2KSP2.exe using the /x option. For more information on how to do this, please refer to the Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack Installation and Change file (located in the \support\tools\ folder). Change to the folder containing the extracted files. Run the Update.exe program in slipstream mode from this folder. For example, to apply the service pack files located in C:\ExtractedFiles to the Windows 2000 installation files located in the distribution folder named Win2000, do the following:

    To extract the files, type:

    d:\W2KSP2.exe /x:c:\ExtractedFiles

Then to create a slipstream install, type:

    c:\ExtractedFiles\i386\update\update.exe /s:c:\win2000

  6. Run the winnt32.exe /cmdcons command from the integrated installation point you created in steps 1 through 5.
For additional information about the Integrated Installation method, refer to the Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack Installation and Deployment Guide.
