SYMPTOMS

When you use a Palm III Handheld device to send e-mail messages, you may receive a generic "Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) Error" error message. If you increase the protocol logging level to Maximum on an Exchange Server computer, you may receive the following error message:
553 malformed address:

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you import entries from the Exchange Personal Address Book (PAB) into the Palm III Handheld device. The Palm III Handheld device imports the alias instead of the full SMTP address; the Exchange Server computer processes the alias as a malformed address.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, manually edit addresses on the Palm III Handheld device so that the full SMTP addresses of the imported entries are displayed, for example:

username@domain.com

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
