SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), when you click Start, and then click Shutdown, the Restart Computer in MS-DOS Mode option is not available.

CAUSE

Windows Me does not support real mode (MS-DOS) functions.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the Windows Me Startup disk.
  2. Click Start, and then click Shutdown.
  3. Click Restart, and then click OK.
  4. When the computer restarts, choose Start Computer wih CD-ROM support, Start Computer without CD-ROM support, or Minimal Boot. When the computer restarts, you should see an MS-DOS prompt rather than the Windows Me desktop.

MORE INFORMATION

If your computer starts from the hard disk instead of the floppy drive, you must change the start sequence in your computer's CMOS settings.
