Message Received When You Start the System Configuration Utility: "Environment Variables Were Moved to Windows Registry" (262786)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q262786

SUMMARY

When you start the System Configuration Utility (Msconfig), you see the following information dialog:

Environment Variables were found in the legacy files Autoexec.bat and/or Config.sys and the variables were moved to the Windows Registry.

After you click the OK button, the System Configuration Utility starts and functions normally. You should not see this warning during subsequent sessions in the System Configuration Utility.

MORE INFORMATION

It is possible, however, that you may receive the preceding message every time you start the Msconfig utility. This may occur if the Autoexec.bat and/or Config.sys file dates have been changed by a third-party utility or a software installation process.

Some third-party antivirus programs or system utilities modify the Autoexec.bat and/or Config.sys file(s) at every restart of the computer causing this message to be displayed each time you run the Msconfig utility.

This behavior may also occur if either the Autoexec.bat or Config.sys files are marked as "Read Only".

To resolve these issues, it may be necessary to disable any third-party antivirus software or system utilities. Also, ensure that Autoexec.bat and Config.sys are not marked "Read Only".

This behavior is by design. Environment variables were moved to the Windows registry to accommodate changes in the way Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) uses the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files.

To run the System Configuration Utility, click Start, click Run, and then type MSConfig next to Open:.
