Error Message Configuring Optional Components in Windows 2000 (262558)

SYMPTOMS

When you are configuring optional components in Windows 2000 Setup, you may receive the following error message:
Program error:
Sysocmgr.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program.
An error log is being generated.
This error message can occur if you are configuring a component that is two or more "levels" down, you click Cancel, and you then click OK. The error message can also occur when are changing installed Windows components by using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.

CAUSE

Windows attempts to access memory that it no longer owns. If you open additional "levels," Windows may try to free the memory again. This may even cause the computer to reboot.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1.
