SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to scan by using the Umax VistaScan 3.52 software, a dialog box displays "Searching Umax Scanner," followed by a Umax Scanner Test option. When you click Test, you receive the following error message:
Scanner access fails

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the Microsoft Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) driver is installed for this scanner. To function properly, the Umax VistaScan 3.52 software requires the installation of the Umax TWAIN device driver.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, obtain the updated version of the VistaScan software from Umax, which permits the Umax TWAIN device driver to be updated automatically when you install the VistaScan software.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, manually update the Umax TWAIN driver. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, double-click System, and then click the Device Manager tab.
  2. Click the plus (+) sign to the left of Imaging Device, select Umax Astra 4000U, click the Properties button, click the Driver tab, and then click the Update Driver button.
  3. Click Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want, and then click Next.
  4. Click Specify the location of the driver (advanced), and then click Next.
  5. Click Umax Astra 4000U [UMAX] 4-26-1999 and you receive the following error message:
    File 1220u.inf was not found
  6. Point to the root of the VistaScan compact disc (pv8630.sys) and choose to keep the newer file. Click Finish.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition.

MORE INFORMATION

NOTE: This issue affects the Umax Astra 2000U and 4000U scanners.

Upgrade or Fresh Install

There is a difference in behavior in the installation of scanner drivers in the following situations:
  • Situation 1: When you upgrade to Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) from a previous version of Windows.
  • Situation 2: When you perform a fresh install of Windows Me (with no previous operating system installed).
Situation 1:

After a migration from Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Windows 98 Second Edition, no WIA driver is installed because the independent hardware vendor (IHV) driver is detected and retained. In this scenario, VistaScan functions as expected because the Umax driver is still being used.

Situation 2:

When you connect the scanner to the computer, the WIA device drivers for the scanner are installed. In this scenario, all WIA functionality performs as expected, but the Umax VistaScan software no longer functions properly. This is because the Umax VistaScan software does not recognize the WIA scanner driver. The VistaScan software requires the IHV driver to function properly.

WIA is a new imaging architecture, introduced in Windows Me, which allows imaging programs to communicate with imaging devices. For more information on WIA, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
