Temp Folder Is Created in Previous Installation of Windows Me (261575)

SYMPTOMS

If you install Windows Millennium Edition (Me) in a new folder or partition on a computer that contains a previous Windows Me installation, the settings for the Temp folder in the Autoexec.bat file and registry may still be associated with the previous Windows Me installation.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Regenv32 exports the TEMP variables to the C:\Autoexec.bat file, which may not be removed when you install Windows Me in a different folder or partition. If you format only the partition in which you are installing Windows Me, or you install Windows Me in a different folder, the Autoexec.bat file on the primary partition is not removed, and the settings in the Autoexec.bat file are not updated to reflect the environment variables for the temporary folder. Because the Autoexec.bat file is not updated, the registry is not updated.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, edit the Autoexec.bat file to reflect the correct environment variables. Then, shut down and restart the computer. The changes in the Autoexec.bat file are then reflected in the following registry location:

HKEY_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControSet\Control\SessionManager\Environment
