Configuring Static IP Addresses for the Public Interface Requires Changing the Internet Connection Sharing Adapter (261341)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q261341

SYMPTOMS

Under Network Properties in Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, when you change the static TCP/IP entries for TCP/IP binding that points to the external network adapter and connects to the Internet, you must also change the TCP/IP binding for the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Adapter.

RESOLUTION

Add the same static IP settings to the TCP/IP binding of the Internet Connection Sharing Adapter. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the My Network Places icon.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Double-click the binding of the TCP/IP, and then click Internet Connection Sharing Adapter.
  4. Add the required TCP/IP entries assigned to you by your Internet service provider or the system administrator.
  5. Click OK.

WORKAROUND

The issue described in the "Symptoms" section can be prevented by modifying only the TCP/IP ICS component in Network Properties. This binding takes precedence over the TCP/IP (Shared) component.
