Uninstall Does Not Remove Media Player 1.0 in Windows Me (261299)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q261299

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Add/Remove Programs tool to uninstall Microsoft Windows Media Player, the Media Player 1.0 component is not removed from your computer.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because during Windows Media Player version 7 or 7.1 installation, the files Mplayer and Mplayer2 are installed on your computer for backward compatibility. These files cannot be removed.

There are three Media Player .exe files in Windows Millennium Edition (Me):
  • Media Player 1.0
  • Media Player 6.4
  • Media Player 7.0
  • Media Player 7.1
These components are included by design.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The Media Player check box in the Add/Remove Programs tool is designed to add or remove Media Player 1.0 (Mplayer). This check box is not designed to add or remove the Windows Media Player 5.2, 6.1, 6.4, or 7.0 component.
