The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 for UNIX on Sun Solaris

This article was previously published under Q260730

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Internet Explorer on a computer running Sun Solaris SPARC 2.7 or later, you may receive the following error message:
Registry setup for Internet Explorer failed. Please reinstall this component.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the registry Setup program may not be able to update the /usr/local/microsoft/common/registry5 file (if you choose the default installation).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, copy the registry5 file from a functional Internet Explorer for UNIX installation's /usr/local/microsoft/common folder to the /usr/local/microsoft/common folder of the Solaris 2.7 installation.

If you do not have a functional Internet Explorer for UNIX installation from which to copy the registry5 file, you can download the file for a default installation from the Microsoft Download Center. The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file. To unzip the registry5.gz file:
  1. Download the file to a folder (for example, /tmp).
  2. Become the "root" user:

    % su

  3. Unzip the file by using Gunzip or Winzip (this example uses Gunzip):

    # gunzip /tmp/registry5.gz

  4. Move the corrupted file that is currently in the Internet Explorer for UNIX installation's "common" folder (this example assumes the default installation location):

    # mv /usr/local/microsoft/common/registry5

    /usr/local/microsoft/common/registry5.bad

  5. Copy the correct file to the Internet Explorer for UNIX installation's "common" folder (this example assumes the default installation location):

    # cp /tmp/registry5 /usr/local/microsoft/common/registry5

NOTE: If you tried to run the non-functional Internet Explorer for UNIX installation, you may need to copy the functional registry5 file to your home folder's (.microsoft/) subfolder to replace the non-functional registry5 file from the installation.
