This article was previously published under Q259995

SYMPTOMS

When the mail template is configured incorrectly, you may not be able to send mail. Direct Mailer task shows the status as "Error." When you click View Task Error Information on the Tools menu, the Mailing Error Information error box appears. The following status message is sent to the status account that is configured in Direct Mail:

From: msgbldsvc@SERVER
Sent: Tuesday, April 18, 2000 10:23 AM
To: user@company.com
Subject: Mailing Notification (Please don't reply to this mail)

The "Example" mailing encountered errors in processing which prevented the
delivery of one or more messages. 4 out of 4 messages have been processed
(0 have been successfully sent). 1 messages failed due to errors in
retrieving or processing template. 0 messages failed due to errors in
retrieving attachments. 0 messages failed due to SMTP errors. 0 messages
failed due to other errors. See Logs (msgbldsvc<datetime>.log,
msgbldsvc.iwl) for details of errors. Time started: 4/18/2000 10:23:06 AM.

The log file called MSGBLDSVC<datetime>.log contains the following error:
3 18-Apr-2000 10:23:06 "TEMPLATE_ERR[http://server/index.htm](404)" "user@company.com" "Mail it" no_mail_sent

CAUSE

Direct Mailer cannot access and process the configured template. If you open the log file for the virtual Web site (for example, winnt\System32\Logfile\W3SVCx), you may see the following entries:
14:58:49 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - GET /dmtemplate.asp - 401 752 Mozilla/4.0+(compatible;+MSIE+4.01;+Windows+NT) - -
where the 401 status code indicates that you cannot access the template script.
14:58:49 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - GET /dmtemplat.asp - 404 623 Mozilla/4.0+(compatible;+MSIE+4.01;+Windows+NT)
where the 404 status code indicates that the template file was not found.

RESOLUTION

There are several ways to resolve this problem.
  • Specify the correct URL for the template. You do not need to specify the HTTP protocol in front of the URL when you create a task for the Direct Mailer. Copy the URL from the Template URL text box, and paste it in the browser. The template page does not return any HTTP errors.
  • If you use example templates that are furnished with Site Server, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

216245 Direct Mailer Cannot Process Configured Template

  • If you have multiple Internet Protocol (IP) addresses or use a multihomed computer for your Web server, you can specify the IP address in the URL (for example, 127.0.0.1/default.htm).
  • Make sure that the IUSR_SERVERNAME user has at least read access in the NTFS file system permissions for the page or folder that you are accessing.
