256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to create a new dial-up connection from a Windows 2000 Professional-based computer that you upgraded from Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98 with Small Business Server (SBS) modem sharing installed, only the following network connection options are available:
  • Dial-up to the Internet
  • Accept Incoming Connections
All other options are unavailable.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this behavior, use the following steps:
  1. Make a backup copy of the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Telephony

  2. Delete the following value:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Telephony\Cards\NextID

  3. Quit and then restart the Make a Connection Wizard. All of the network connection options should now be available.

NOTE: The Accept Incoming calls option is dependent on the user's privileges.
  4. Perform these steps for all the users that logged on to the workstation.
To prevent this behavior from happening to new users, modify the default user profile:
  1. Use Regedt32.exe to load the Ntuser.dat hive from the C:\Documents and Settings\Default User folder.
  2. Delete the following value:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Telephony\Cards\NextID

  3. Unload the hive.
New users that log on to the workstation should not experience the behavior.
