OL2000: You Cannot Switch E-mail Message Formats Between HTML and Rich Text Format (259560)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

This article was previously published under Q259560

SYMPTOMS

When you compose an e-mail message in Outlook, you cannot switch from Rich Text Format (RTF) to Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) format, or from HTML to RTF.

CAUSE

Outlook cannot directly convert e-mail messages from RTF to HTML, or from HTML to RTF.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must first convert the e-mail message to plain text format, and then convert it to either RTF or HTML.

NOTE: All text formatting is lost when you convert the e-mail message to plain text format.

MORE INFORMATION

On the Format menu of an e-mail message, you can choose options that let you switch between e-mail message formats. However, Outlook cannot directly convert e-mail messages from HTML to RTF, and from RTF to HTML. Therefore, you must first switch the e-mail message to plain text format. After you switch the e-mail message to plain text format, you can click the Format menu again, and then switch the e-mail message to the format that you want.

NOTE: If you want to change the format of an e-mail message, you must be able to edit the e-mail message. For example, if you open an e-mail message that you receive in your Inbox, the format choices are not available. If you click Forward or Reply, the format choices are available on the Format menu.
