OL98: Characters Appear as Meaningless Symbols When You Use a Non-English Language Version of Outlook on Windows 2000 (258686)

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Greek or Russian language version of Outlook 98 on Windows 2000, create a profile and then add the Internet Mail service, the characters in the Internet Profile Wizard appear as meaningless symbols.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

To apply the fix do the following:
  1. Quit Outlook.
  2. Click the Start button, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  3. Type outlook.exe.
  4. Click your hard disk, click to select the Include subfolders check box, and then click Find Now.
  5. When the file is found, right-click the Mapi32.dll file, and then click Rename.
  6. Rename the file to "Mapi32.old."
  7. If you receive a prompt with a warning message, click Yes.
  8. From the hotfix, copy the new Mapi32.dll file to the Outlook.exe folder that you found in step 5.
  9. Restart Outlook.
