  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 98

This article was previously published under Q258680

SYMPTOMS

When you try to resume your computer from Suspend mode or Standby mode, your computer may stop responding (hang). This behavior occurs only if your computer is configured for Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your computer is configured with both of the following settings:
  • A screen saver Wait time of one minute
  • A Turn Off Monitor setting of one minute in the Power Management tool in Control Panel.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

To resolve this problem, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use any of the following methods:
  • Setting the screen resolution to 640 X 480.
  • Configuring the computer to run in Advanced Power Management (APM) mode rather than ACPI.
  • Disabling the mode change option in the screen saver if available (not all screen savers have this option).
  • Set both the monitor resolution and the screen saver program to use the same resolution, if available (not all screen savers have this option). You may be able to configure these options by using either the user interface or the registry.
NOTE: If the monitor is set to turn off after the screen saver set value (20 minutes for monitor to turn off, 15 minutes for screen saver) this problem does not occur.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
