ICS Client Causes ICS Server to Connect to Internet During Windows Millennium Setup (258561)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q258561

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade to Windows Millennium Edition (Me) from Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) on an Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) client computer, the ICS host computer may automatically dial the default dial-up networking connection.

This occurs when the client computer is in the System Configuration (final) portion of Windows Me Setup.

CAUSE

The System Configuration portion of Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Setup generates network traffic that causes the ICS host to dial the Internet.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, use any of the following methods:
  • Temporarily unplug the client computer from the network until after Windows Me Setup is finished.
  • Unplug the analog or digital line on the ICS host computer.
  • Disable ICS before you upgrade the client or ICS host.
