Oabgen.dll file does not post Changes.oab file to public folder (258055)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5

This article was previously published under Q258055

SYMPTOMS

When users try to perform a differential download of the offline Address Book, those users may get a full download. If you look for the Changes.oab differential update file, the file is not in the public folder.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the server component that generates the offline Address Book does not finish posting the changes to the public folder. If this occurs, all clients that request a differential download perform a full download. A full download can cause increased download times for the offline Address Book.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5.

MORE INFORMATION

When either of the following two conditions exists, the Oabgen.dll file may not post the Change.oab file update to the public folder:
  • A user gains or loses a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) address.
  • A user's SMTP address before the at sign (@) symbol is 64 characters.
When the offline Address Book generation process begins, the full download message is correctly created and posted to the public folder. However, when the process continues and tries to create the differences message (Changes.oab), if one of the preceding conditions is met, the logic fails and the differential message is not posted. When a client requests a differential download, the client searches for the difference message. When the client cannot find the difference message in the public folder, the client performs a full download. Also note that the offline Address Book generation process does not log any errors to the application event log when the preceding conditions are met.
