ACPI-Compliant Computer May Hang on Resume from S1 State (257360)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

This article was previously published under Q257360

SYMPTOMS

When you resume a computer that complies with the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) specification, the computer may display a blank screen and may stop responding (hang). This problem is more likely to occur if the computer uses the Intel PIIX4 controller, and is configured to go to the S1 power state when suspended. The S1 power state is the lightest possible sleep state.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if a thermal event causes a System Control Interrupt (SCI) to occur before the Programmable Interrupt Controller (PIC) has been reawakened. In this situation, the PIC is placed into a configuration where the SCI cannot be serviced. Because SCI is a system interrupt that is used by hardware to notify the operating system of ACPI events, certain ACPI actions required to resume the computer cannot occur, and the computer stops responding.
