File and Print Sharing Service May Not Rebind If a USB Network Adapter Is Removed and Reinserted (256891)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

This article was previously published under Q256891

SYMPTOMS

The File and Printer Sharing service (VServer) on Windows 98 Second Edition-based computers may not rebind to a Universal Serial Bus (USB) network adapter if you remove and reinsert the adapter. When this occurs, previously shared folders are no longer available to clients on the network.

CAUSE

Adding a NetBIOS name during VServer initialization may sometimes not succeed because of a timing condition in the configuration management code for VServer. As a result, the VServer initialization is not completed and network shares are not available to other network clients.
