Clearing DDNS Per-Scope Properties (255923)

SUMMARY

After you configure Dynamic DNS (DDNS) properties on a scope, it is not possible to clear the per-scope DNS properties using the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) snap-in. The control of that scope's DNS properties cannot be returned to the server level.

DHCP option inheritance follows a natural hierarchy:
  1. Default or server option
  2. Scope option
  3. Class option
  4. Reservation option
The option types above are listed from least specific to most specific. A more specific option always takes precedence over a less specific option. Therefore, a scope option takes precedence over a server option. Normally, you can set more specific options at each level and then remove them when necessary. When you remove a more specific option (for example, Scope Option 044 - WINS Servers), any less specific option now takes effect (for example, Server Option 044 -WINS Servers).

This is true except for the case of DDNS settings. After you configure DDNS properties on a scope, it is not possible to clear the per-scope DNS properties through the DHCP snap-in. The result is that control of that scope's DNS properties cannot be returned to the server level.

To view the DDNS properties on a server:
  1. Start the DHCP snap-in.
  2. Right-click the server, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the DNS tab.
To view the DDNS properties for a scope:
  1. Start the DHCP snap-in.
  2. Click the server, and then expand the scopes beneath it.
  3. Right-click the appropriate scope, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the DNS tab.
If you want to clear the DNS properties of a scope so that the scope will again use the DHCP server's DNS properties, use the following steps.

  1. Start Registry Editor.
  2. Locate and remove the following registry key (where ScopeAddress is the address of the scope):

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DhcpServer\Configuration\Subnets\ScopeAddress\SubnetOptions\081

  3. Stop and restart the DHCP Server service.
