Cannot Open Word Document with Word Viewer from the Cache with FTP Protocol (255505)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 for Windows 98 Second Edition
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 for Windows NT 4.0

This article was previously published under Q255505

SYMPTOMS

You may not be able to use Word Viewer 97-2000 to view Microsoft Word documents if you are accessing them on an FTP server with Internet Explorer 5.01 and they are already cached.

The first attempt to access the files works. Further attempts result in an error message stating that the requested page cannot be displayed.

This behavior occurs whether or not the Enable folder view for FTP sites check box is selected in the Browsing section on the Advanced tab in the Internet Options dialog box.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, change the cache setting to always check for updated content on every visit to the page. To do this, click Internet Options on the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Settings on the General tab, click Every visit to the page, and then click OK. For FTP, this forces the content to be downloaded again as a new copy rather than picked from the cache.

NOTE: You must install the hotfix described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article for this workaround to work:

241727 Internet Explorer Does Not Display Updated Files Over FTP URL

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
