SUMMARY

This article describes how to configure Outlook Express to send and receive e-mail using your CompuServe 2000, version 5.0 account.

MORE INFORMATION

CompuServe 2000 now uses Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) for e-mail.

NOTE: Accounts bound by SecurID cannot be accessed using IMAP. This article applies only to CompuServe 2000, which uses e-mail addresses similar to the following address

e-mailname@cs.com

where e-mailname is your e-mail name.

This article does not apply to Classic CompuServe or other versions of CompuServe, which use e-mail addresses similar to:

e-mailname@cis.com
e-mailname@compuserve.com

To configure Outlook Express to access your CompuServe 2000 IMAP account, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
  2. On the Mail tab, click Add, and then click Mail.
  3. Type your name in the Display name box, and then click Next.
  4. Click to select the I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use check box, type your CompuServe 2000 address in the E-mail Address box, and then click Next.
  5. For the incoming mail server type, click IMAP. For the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server, type your IMAP server name (imap.cs.com). For the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server, type the IMAP SMTP server name (smtp.cs.com), and then click Next.
  6. Type your CompuServe 2000 member name in the Account name box.
  7. Click Next, click Finish, and then click Close to exit the Internet Accounts dialog box.
Although the preceding steps allow you to receive mail from the IMAP server, you may encounter problems when you try to send mail. To configure validation of your sending (SMTP) e-mail server, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
  2. Select the account that you just configured, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Servers tab, select the My server requires authentication check box. This option sets your SMTP server validation to use the same user name and password that you previously set for your IMAP server. The Settings button allows you to set a different user name and password, if it is different from your IMAP server.
  4. Click OK, and then click Close to close all dialog boxes.
