Invalid Page Fault in Ism.dll When Printing to HP DeskJet Printer (248786)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to print to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) DeskJet printer, you may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation, and will be shut down.
If you click Details, one of the following messages may be displayed:
Spool32 caused an invalid page fault in module ISM.DLL
Spool32 caused a GPF in ISM.DLL

CAUSE

The error message occurs when a portion of the printer driver code that is not needed for printing is accessed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, rename the Image Server folder:
  1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Explore to start Windows Explorer.
  2. Open the C:\Program Files folder.
  3. Click the Image Server folder, and then click Rename on the File menu.
  4. Rename the folder to Image, press ENTER, and then quit Windows Explorer.
  5. Restart the computer.
