Windows 95 Hangs on Reboot with CardBus Card Installed (247965)

SYMPTOMS

After you install a CardBus card and a PC Card in a CardBus-based laptop computer, your computer may intermittently stop responding (hang) when you restart it.

Additionally, Windows may eventually display a "VFAT device initialization" error message.

This problem typically first occurs during the second restart after you install the cards.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

WORKAROUND

Note that disabling the COM port in the computer's BIOS settings may allow you to work around the problem until you can apply the update.
