Cannot View Thumbnails in Windows 2000 Shared Folder from IE 4.0 (247597)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This article was previously published under Q247597

SYMPTOMS

When you place image files in a subfolder of a shared folder and then use Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) 4.0x on another computer to view the image files as thumbnails, the folder stops responding and the following error message appears:
'Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module Thumbvw.dll....'
This behavior occurs when the files are on a computer running either Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional or Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, usually when you use the scroll bars or refresh the window while the program is rendering the thumbnails.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, on the computer from which you view the thumbnails, either install Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 (IE5) or copy Thumbvw.dll from the IE5 download package to the following location:

C:\Winnt\System32 (on a Windows NT 4.0 computer)

C:\Windows\System (on a Windows 9.x computer)

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional and Microsoft Windows 2000 Server.
