Recycle Bin Displays Incorrect Size for Disks Larger Than 4GB (247270)

SYMPTOMS

If you view the size of the Recycle Bin on a logical disk which is larger than 4 gigabytes (GB), you see the wrong size displayed for the Recycle Bin.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Recycle Bin only uses 32-bit numbers to calculate the size.

You need to use 64-bit numbers to correctly calculate the size of the Recycle Bin for a hard disk larger than 4 GB.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.
