Cannot Print to Printer on LPT1 When Mapped or Captured to a Network Shared Printer (246971)

SYMPTOMS

When a network printer is mapped or captured to use LPT1, local printing may not work properly.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the local LPT1 printer port is redirected to use the network shared resource.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  2. Right-click the printer that is mapped or captured to a network share using LPT1, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Details tab, and then click Add Port.
  4. In the Network box, specify the location of the printer (for example, \\server\printer), and then click OK, where \\server\printer is the name of your network print queue and printer name.
  5. Click Capture Printer Port. Make sure that the port in use by the printer is not LPT1, and that the path is \\server\printer.
  6. Click End Capture, click LPT1 \\server\printer, and then click OK.
  7. Click OK.

MORE INFORMATION

If this issue occurs because of a network login script, the script must be rewritten to capture or map an alternate port.
