SUMMARY

Beginning with version 5.01, Outlook Express supports the display of Hotmail advertising banners.

MORE INFORMATION

Because the Hotmail e-mail service is free to all users, the service relies on advertising to support itself. Displaying Hotmail advertising while viewing Hotmail folders in Outlook Express helps to ensure that Hotmail will continue to be offered as a free service. While viewing any Hotmail folder, an advertising pane appears across the bottom of the Outlook Express program to download and display Hotmail advertising. This pane only appears when viewing Hotmail folders and there is no way to disable this advertising pane.

While working offline, Outlook Express displays previously downloaded (cached) Hotmail advertising and does not connect to Hotmail to download new advertising until the next time the Hotmail folders are viewed while online.
