PRJ2000: Incorrect Sort Order When You Group by Custom Field (245922)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 2000

This article was previously published under Q245922

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you group a project by a custom field, the groups may not be sorted in the order expected.

For example, when you group a project by the Duration1 field in ascending order, the groups may not be sorted in correct chronological order.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur when you do the following:
  1. You create a custom field with a value list, and you define descriptions for some or all of the values.
  2. You group the project based on the custom field.
This behavior occurs because Microsoft Project 2000 sorts groups for custom fields by the custom field Description if present, rather than by the custom field Value.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, remove all of the descriptions from the value list for the custom field.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
