MOD2000: Installing Package Prompts You for CD Key (245820)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install an Access 2000 Run-Time package created by the Package and Deployment wizard, you are prompted for a CD key, even though Access 2000 Run-Time is not supposed to prompt you for a CD key.

CAUSE

You chose to include Access 2000 Run-Time, but when you were prompted, you did not select the Data1.msi file for Access 2000 Run-Time. You actually chose one from another product, such as Microsoft Office 2000.

RESOLUTION

Create a new package that uses the correct Data1.msi for Access 2000 Run-Time. Data1.msi for Access 2000 Run-Time is located on the Microsoft Office 2000 Developer CD in the following folder:

\ODETools\v9\AccessRT folder.

All Microsoft Office 2000 products have Data1.msi as part of their Setup and they use the same Setup technology as Access 2000 Run-Time. If you accidentally point to an incorrect CD or Setup folder in the Package and Deployment wizard and select the Data1.msi there, that product is loaded into your package automatically. If you then run that package's Setup on another computer that does not have Access 2000 or Access 2000 Run-Time already loaded, it attempts to install that product as if it were Access 2000 Run-Time. However, because these full version products have CD keys, you are prompted for the key.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

CAUTION: If you follow the steps in this example, you modify the sample database Northwind.mdb. You may want to back up the Northwind.mdb file and follow these steps on a copy of the database.

  1. In Access, open the sample database Northwind.mdb.
  2. On the Tools menu, point to Macro, and then click Visual Basic Editor.
  3. On the Add-ins menu, click Package and Deployment Wizard.

  4. In the Package and Deployment Wizard, click Package.
  5. Click Next on each page and accept the defaults until you see the page titled Package and Deployment Wizard - Included Files.
  6. Click to select the Include Access Runtime check box. Click Next.

    NOTE: When you are asked for the location of Access run-time components, insert Microsoft Office 2000 CD1, and then browse to the following file:

    \Data1.MSI

  7. Continue clicking Next in the wizard, accepting the defaults, until the wizard is finished.
  8. Try to install the resulting package on a computer that does not have Access 2000 or Access 2000 Run-Time installed.
  9. Early in the Setup, you are prompted with a message indicating that Access Run-Time must be installed. Click OK.
  10. Note that as you proceed with the Setup, you are eventually asked for a CD key.
