XL2000: Last Modified File Date Is Changed Unexpectedly (245420)

SYMPTOMS

When you open a workbook in Microsoft Excel 2000 that was created in an earlier version of Excel, the Modified date in the properties of the file may be changed. This behavior can occur with the following versions of Excel:
  • Microsoft Excel version 5.0 for Windows NT
  • Microsoft Excel version 4.0 for Windows
  • Microsoft Excel version 4.0 for the Macintosh
  • Microsoft Excel version 3.0 for Windows
  • Microsoft Excel version 3.0 for the Macintosh

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, create a backup of your Excel workbook file before you open it in Excel 2000. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the Excel file in question.
  2. On the shortcut menu, click Copy.
  3. Right-click the destination folder that you want to use for Excel backup files.
  4. On the shortcut menu, click Paste. Notice that your file has been copied into the folder that you selected.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Excel 2000.
