RESOLUTION

To correct the problem, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Uninstall Additional Versions of Excel

  1. Use the Add/Remove Programs feature in Control Panel to uninstall all additional versions of Excel.
  2. Reinstall Excel 97.
  3. Double-click the update to install it.
Microsoft does not recommend that you install and use more than one version of Microsoft Excel on the same computer. For additional information about running multiple versions of Excel on the same computer, click the article numbers below to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Method 2: Re-Register Excel 97 by Using RegServer

Although Microsoft does not recommend this, it is possible to install and use more than one version of Excel on the same computer. For example, you can install and use both Excel 2000 and Excel 97 on the same computer. To install the Excel 97 update, you must reset the default Excel 97 settings by following these steps:

NOTE: The following steps will reset all Excel settings.
  1. Quit Excel.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type the following. Include the quotation marks.

    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /regserver

NOTE: If Excel 97 is not located in the above path, use the correct path that points to your custom location for Excel.exe.
  4. Double-click the update file to install it.
NOTE: If you also have Excel 2000 installed, you may need to repeat steps 2-3 with the path that points to the Excel.exe file for Excel 2000.
