Policy Setting to Remove Options Tool Does Not Work (244755)

SYMPTOMS

After you install Active Desktop, you may not be able to set the policy to remove the Options tool in Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the NoOptions policy setting was added as a new restriction in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 and has the same functionality as the NoFolderOptions policy in Internet Explorer 4.0.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft InternetExplorer 4.01 Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

If you set the NoFolderOptions policy with the NoOptions policy, the policy works with Windows NT classic shell and the Internet Explorer shell.

If you set the NoFolderOptions registry value to REG_DWORD 0x1 in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

the folder options are removed from the Start menu, as well as the Options tool on the View menu in Windows Explorer.

If you do not have Active Desktop installed, you need to set the NoOptions policy to get the same behavior. The NoBrowserOptions policy only removes the Options tool from the browser window.
