SYMPTOMS
You may receive a "Stop 0x50" error message in Ntoskrnl.exe. This may occur when you reboot your computer after running Chkdsk.
This behavior can occur if you are running Windows NT 3.51 Service Pack 5 with newer fixes such as the fix described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
163852 Invalid Operand with Locked CMPXCHG8B Instruction
When this occurs, your kernel file has a date stamp of 08/17/1998 or later for U.S. English builds.
RESOLUTION
A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.
