PCMCIA devices not working with Windows NT 4.0 Embedded (244062)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows NT Embedded 4.0

This article was previously published under Q244062

SYMPTOMS

PC card devices do not appear as devices under Windows NT 4.0 Embedded. Also, no PCMCIA utility appears in Control Panel. This occurs even though you have selected the "Standard OS" component or added PCMCIA.sys to your custom component.

CAUSE

The file PCMCIA.sys is included in the Standard OS component, but the registry keys are not.

RESOLUTION

The appropriate registry keys to support PCMCIA and any third-party PC card devices on Windows NT 4.0 Embedded must be added in a separate component. When designing your target system, you must select Standard OS, and then create a custom component for your PC card devices. This must include registry keys as well as any files that your PC card uses. You can use the Sysdiff utility that is included with Windows NT 4.0 Embedded to determine which registry keys and files must be added if you want to create a custom component definition file (.kdf) for your PC card device.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
