"The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available" error message when you change the installation state in Office 2000 (244021)

SYMPTOMS

When you use a feature that is set to Installed on First Use or you try to change the installation state of some features in the Microsoft Office 2000: Update Features dialog box, you may receive the following error message:
The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the 'Office 2000 product' disk and click OK.
In the preceding message, Office 2000 product is the name of the specific Office product that you are using.

When you insert your Office CD and click OK to the preceding message, you may receive the following error message:
Could not find 'Office 2000 product'. Please try another location.

CAUSE

These error messages may appear if both of the following are true:
  • You are using the Academic Version of Office 2000 that was preinstalled on your computer by the manufacturer. -and-

  • You are using a computer manufactured by Dell Computer Corporation.
The version of Office 2000 that was preinstalled on your computer is different from the version on the CD you are using.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, please contact Dell technical support, using the phone number provided with your computer system.

Dell confims this problem was resolved on all Dell computers that were shipped after October 1999.
