XL97: Crash Opening Password-Protected File That Contains Defined Name (243936)

SYMPTOMS

When you open your workbook in Microsoft Excel 97, the following error message appears:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following:
EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module SCANLOAD.DLL at 0137:100012a7.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • You are opening a workbook that was saved in the Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 Workbook file format.

    -and-

  • You specified a password in the Password to open box in the Save Options dialog box when you saved the Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 workbook.

    -and-

  • The Microsoft Excel 5.0/95 workbook contains one or more defined names.

    -and-

  • You have applied either of the following updates to Excel 97:

    • Excel 97 Security Patch
    • Microsoft Excel 97 SYLK File Security Update

RESOLUTION

A Microsoft Excel 97 Programmatic Text Export Update that corrects this problem is available for download from the following Microsoft Web site:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
