  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q243920

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition, you cannot select the address book from Microsoft Outlook Express version 5.0 during a mail merge, nor can you select it in the Word 98 Address Book.

CAUSE

Word 98 has not been updated to use the Outlook Express 5.0 Address Book.

RESOLUTION

The Word 98 Mail Merge Updater allows you to use your Outlook Express 5.0 contacts in the Word 98 Address Book and as a data source for a mail merge.

To use the Outlook Express 5.0 Address Book in Word 98, you must run the Mail Merge Updater that is located in the Outlook Express 5 Extras folder. To run the Word 98 Mail Merge Updater, follow these steps:
  1. Quit all applications.
  2. Open the Extras folder, which is located in the Outlook Express folder.
  3. Locate and double-click the Word 98 Mail Merge Updater to start it.
  4. Click OK to the message that states, "Word 98 Mail Merge was successfully updated".
After you run the updater, the Address Book will include listings for the Personal Address Book, Outlook Express Address Book, and Main Identity. The addresses from Outlook Express 5.0 appear under Main Identity.

MORE INFORMATION

If you run the Word 98 Mail Merge Updater, you can no longer use contacts currently stored in Outlook Express 4.5 as a data source for a Word 98 mail merge. To use Outlook Express 4.5 contacts as a data source for a Word 98 mail merge, import the contacts to Outlook Express 5.0 before you perform a mail merge. For more information about importing contacts from Outlook Express 4.5 to Outlook Express 5.0, see the topic "Importing information from other programs" in Outlook Express 5.0 Help.
