SYMPTOMS

When you remotely view an Windows NT 4.0 event log or open a saved Windows NT 4.0 log file using a computer running Windows 2000, the logs does not display the correct information in some warning and error events.

The error message in the event contains the following string:
The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Windows 2000 populates the log file with different events than the Windows NT 4.0 events.

For example, if you view an event log that is on a computer running Windows NT 4.0 Server and Microsoft Exchange from a remote computer that does not have Exchange installed, and the log file contains specific entries for Exchange, you do not see the text of the Exchange events in the log file.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use a computer running Windows NT 4.0 to view the log files that contain an event with the text "The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer."

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000.
