SYMPTOMS

When you are modifying user information on the Terminal Services Profile tab in Active Directory Users and Computers or Local Users and Groups, the follow error may be displayed:
The home directory was not created because it already exists. You might want to select a different name, or make sure that the user has full access privileges to the existing one.

CAUSE

This error message occurs if the user you are modifying has a Terminal Services home folder specified. The error message occurs because of the way in which attributes set on the Terminal Services Profile tab are written to the user object. Each time a single attribute is set, the entire set of attributes is written to the object. The error message occurs because the Terminal Services home folder attribute is being set, but the folder has already been created.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
