SUMMARY

This article describes the performance impact of Remote Administration on Microsoft Windows 2000 Terminal Server.

MORE INFORMATION

In Windows 2000 Terminal Services, Remote Administration provides a way to manage servers with minimal overhead and impact on performance. The following features are disabled in Remote Administration; Registry Key tracking, Application Compatibility, and idle sessions.

Remote Administration fine tunes a Terminal Server by having Process Scheduling set for Background Applications. This setting keeps the server in Server mode rather than Workstation mode. The performance impact of Remote Administration mode is approximately:
  • 85K non-paged pool memory
  • 175K paged-pool memory
  • 2.25MB overall memory commit
In addition, a Terminal Server in Remote Administration mode does not load the Tsappcmp.dll file. This file contains application compatibility code needed for an Application Server. When you start Terminal Server, the Kernel does not load this overhead when you use Remote Administration mode.
