HOW TO: Modify Process Scheduling in Windows 2000 Terminal Services (243200)

SUMMARY

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server is designed to have client sessions perform as workstations. Because of this, the administrator is unable to configure the process scheduling of a server. This is no longer the case when you use Windows 2000 Terminal Services. Windows 2000 Terminal Services default settings are based on whether the terminal server is in application or remote administration mode. Application servers default to having the Applications option enabled, and remote administration servers default to having the Background Services option enabled. These settings are configurable, and they are part of the Application Response Performance options.

Modifying Settings

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Performance Options.
3. Under Application Response, select either Applications or Background Services based on the needs of the connecting users.

NOTE: When you select Background Services, higher priority is given to the operating system, and when you select Applications, higher priority is given to user mode programs.
