OFF2000: Program Removed After You Update Office with Custom Maintenance Wizard (242988)

SYMPTOMS

After you update your Office installation with a .cmw file you created with the Custom Maintenance Wizard (CMW), one or more of your Office programs may unexpectedly be uninstalled.

CAUSE

One or more of your Office programs is removed during an update of an Office installation with a .cmw file if all of the following are true:
  • You are using either Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0. -and-

  • You do not have Internet Explorer 4.01 with SP1 (or SP2) and the Windows Desktop update installed. -and-

  • You set one of the top-level features, like Microsoft Word for Windows, in the Custom Maintenance Wizard to Installed on First Use.
If you do not have an operating system that supports Windows Installer shortcuts, any Office programs that are currently installed will be uninstalled if you try to set them to Installed on First Use in the Custom Maintenance Wizard. This is because Installed on First Use is not supported on operating systems that do not support Windows Installer shortcuts.

RESOLUTION

If you have already updated your Office installation with the .cmw file, you can either add the feature through Maintenance Mode Setup, or you can create a new .cmw file and update your installation again.

Using Maintenance Mode Setup

  1. Double-click Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
  2. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, double-click the Office 2000 entry in the list of installed products.
  3. In the Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Add or Remove Features.
  4. In the Microsoft Office 2000: Update Features dialog box, click the icon next to the feature you want to change, and then select the installation state that you want. For example, change the Microsoft Word for Windows feature from Not Available to Run from My Computer.
  5. When you are finished changing installation states, click Update Now.

Creating a New .cmw File

  1. Start the Custom Maintenance Wizard. Click Next, select the appropriate MSI file, and click Next.
  2. If you want to modify your existing .cmw file, click Open an existing CMW file in the Open the CMW File dialog box. Otherwise, click Do not open an existing CMW file. Click Next.

    If you opened your previously saved .cmw file, the Set Feature Installation States dialog box will contain all of your previously saved settings.
  3. Click the icon next to the feature you want to change, and then select the installation state that you want. For example, change the Microsoft Word for Windows feature from Installed on First Use to Run from My Computer.
  4. When you are finished changing installation states, click Finish.
  5. In the last Custom Maintenance Wizard dialog box, note the sample command line provided by the Custom Maintenance Wizard and then click Exit.
  6. Run the Custom Maintenance Wizard using this new .cmw file. For example, your command line might look like the following:

    \\server\share\Maintwiz.exe /c \\server\share\Update.cmw
