Text boxes and other elements created in Word 97 change position in Word 2000 (242930)
The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q242930 SYMPTOMS
Text boxes and other drawing elements anchored to a header paragraph are positioned differently in Word 97 and Word 2000. The vertical distance "from margin" is calculated differently.
CAUSE
This occurs when both of the following conditions are met:
- The text box or other drawing element is positioned vertically with a distance calculated "from margin".
- The header contains so much text that it exceeds the top margin space and forces down the beginning of the main document text.
The positioning algorithm is different in Word 97 and Word 2000. Word 97 interprets "vertical distance x cm from margin" as "x cm from the bottom of the page margin if the header is within the margin and x cm from the bottom of the header if the bottom of the header is below the margin". Word 2000 always calculates the distance from the page margin, regardless of the size of the header.
The compatibility option Lay out AutoShapes like Word 97 does not affect this behavior.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a (SR-1/SR-1a).

To temporarily work around this behavior, position text boxes and other drawing elements vertically, specifying a distance "from page" or "from paragraph" rather than "from margin".
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a.
