DNS Server Migration from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000: DNS Does Not Start When DBCS Is Used in Zone File (242891)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

This article was previously published under Q242891

SYMPTOMS

If a zone that is hosted by a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Domain Name System (DNS) server contains double-byte character set (DBCS) characters and you upgrade the server to Windows 2000, the DNS server does not load the names that use DBCS characters.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior:
  1. Before you start the DNS server, use Notepad to open the zone file that contains DBCS characters.
  2. Save the file as a UTF-8 file, and then close the file.
  3. Start the DNS server.

MORE INFORMATION

The DBCS supports thousands of characters, each identified by a unique 2-byte character value.

Unicode Translation Format-8 (UTF-8) supports characters outside the standard ASCII character set range of 0x00 through 0x7F.
