The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 2000

This article was previously published under Q242647

SYMPTOMS

When you define a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) code, Microsoft Project may delete existing WBS numbers.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:
  1. Duplicate WBS codes exist for multiple tasks.
  2. You define a custom WBS code format for your project, and in the WBS Code Definition dialog box, you select the Verify uniqueness of new WBS codes check box.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use the appropriate method for your situation.

Method 1: Renumber the WBS Codes

Renumber the WBS codes to create new, unique, WBS values for all tasks in the project.

NOTE: The following steps assume that you have already defined a custom WBS code for your project.
  1. On the Project menu, point to WBS, and then click Renumber.
  2. In the WBS Renumber dialog box, click Entire project.
  3. Click OK.
  4. When you are prompted to proceed, click Yes.

Method 2: Allow Duplicate WBS Values for Some Tasks

NOTE: The following steps assume that you have already defined a custom WBS code for your project.
  1. On the Project menu, point to WBS, and then click Define Code.
  2. In the WBS Code Definition dialog box, click to clear the Verify uniqueness of new WBS codes check box.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Modify the WBS codes as appropriate.
