Boot Menu Is Not Displayed and Timeout Value Is Not Used (242443)

SYMPTOMS

If you install Windows 2000 on a computer with no other operating system installed, no Boot menu is displayed when you start the computer. Windows 2000 starts automatically without pausing to display any choices. Changing the Timeout value in the Boot.ini file does not have any effect.

CAUSE

If there is only one value in the [Operating Systems] section in the Boot.ini file, the option is not displayed. Windows 2000 starts immediately because there is no choice to be made.

RESOLUTION

If you need the Boot menu to be displayed, edit the Boot.ini file and create a second entry in the [Operating Systems] section. You can copy the existing entry in that section. After you add a second entry, the Boot menu is displayed and the Timeout value is used.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
