SYMPTOMS

When you run the Repair process, Setup checks your hard disk for problems, and then the computer may restart without finishing the Repair process.

CAUSE

The Repair process runs Chkdsk.exe on the drives before making any changes. When this occurs, the following message appears:

Please wait while Setup examines your disks. This may take several minutes depending on the size of the disks.

If Setup finds issues with a drive, it displays the following message and then restarts the computer in 15 seconds:

Setup has performed maintenance on your hard disk. You must restart your computer to continue with Setup.

If Chkdsk makes changes to a drive, a restart is required before any other changes are made. Because the restart occurs automatically, the computer may restart before you notice the message.

RESOLUTION

When you run the Repair process, make sure to watch the screen for a restart after Chkdsk runs. If this occurs, run the Repair process a second time so that the Repair process finishes successfully.
